Connor McDavid was the #1 pick of the 2015 NHL draft |
The NHL entry draft doesn’t usually heil in comparison to the NBA draft, both of which have historically fallen on the same week in late June. The 2015 NHL draft may have been different as a player dubbed “generational” was picked #1 to Edmonton in center, Connor McDavid. The 18 year-old Canadian superstar has elicited comparisons to the games elite and has been muttered alongside such greats as Gretzky and Lemieux. He was a no brainer pick at #1 for the former Bruin, and new Edmonton Oiler, general manager, Peter Chiarelli, who is hoping to build a team that can get back to the postseason for the first time since the ‘07-’08 campaign. Chiarelli’s phone line was busy this weekend as he also made a handful of trades bringing in Griffin Reinhart, Eric Gryba, and Cam Talbot among others to help kickstart and revamp this Oilers roster. It all may have been a bit much for hockey fans to inhale at once, but I think Chiarelli is off to an excellent start and I truly think Edmonton fans have something to look forward to. This man was a mastermind in Boston when he constructed the 2010-2011 Stanley Cup roster that I think will go down as one of the most talented rosters.

Jack Eichel went #2 in the draft to Buffalo. The BU product was a vital part of the Terriers run to the National Championship game last season picking up a Hobey Baker award on the way in rout to a historic freshmen campaign.
Dylan Strome (Cayotes), Mitch Marner (Maple Leafs), and Noah Hanifin (Hurricanes) rounded out the top 5 picks.
